Dark Water Drift

Author: Erin Donnelly  |  Series: The Basin Bounty Hunters

Seasoned bounty hunter Robert Hayes arrives in Houma tracking a cartel fugitive. Protected witness Lisa Morgan is relocated to a temporary safehouse. Robert criticizes her lack of caution; Lisa snaps that she never asked for this. A massive hurricane shifts course toward the bayou. The safehouse is compromised, forcing Robert to move Lisa immediately. They take refuge on an isolated houseboat. A single dry sleeping area forces them into awkward closeness. Thunder shakes the boat; Lisa reveals she fears storms. He comforts her with calm instructions. Robert discovers the boat’s engine has been tampered with. Lisa accuses him of bringing danger; he fires back. Their radio goes dead as the storm intensifies. Lisa repairs a broken fuse, restoring partial power. Robert finds a cartel marker carved into the dock. They share a tense moment while securing the windows. Robert pulls away, insisting they keep things professional. Waves slam the boat, knocking supplies overboard. Gunshots echo across the water—someone is approaching through the storm. Robert scans the shoreline for intruders. They alternate between storm prep and lookout duty. Their bickering softens into tense camaraderie. He reveals he once lost a witness during a storm. She shares how the cartel destroyed her family. Footprints appear on the flooded deck. They lean close examining the prints. Lisa steps back, overwhelmed. Robert tries to fix the engine but fails. Lisa wants to flee in the skiff; Robert says it’s too dangerous. They prepare the skiff as a last resort. An intruder tries to board the houseboat. Robert drives the attacker off with warning shots. Lisa recognizes the intruder as a cartel scout. She admits she’s terrified she won’t survive the night. He promises he’ll die before he lets them take her. The cartel boat circles in the distance. The houseboat breaks loose from its moorings and drifts into open water. They vow to survive the storm and the cartel. The boat drifts through flooded marshland. The cartel boat closes in. Lightning reveals armed men on the approaching boat. Robert and Lisa barricade the cabin. They hide together as footsteps echo on the deck. She distracts an intruder long enough for Robert to strike. The remaining attackers retreat as the storm peaks. Lisa manages to restart the engine. They steer toward higher ground. She fears Robert will disappear once she’s safe. He admits he’s falling for her. They kiss as the storm finally breaks. Backup reaches them at dawn. Lisa is cleared to relocate anywhere she chooses. They sit together on the dock watching the sunrise. She chooses to stay in Louisiana—with him. He welcomes her into his life. Locals thank them for stopping the cartel scouts. They stand together overlooking the calm bayou. Hand in hand, they walk toward whatever comes next.
