The Silent Holler

Author: Casey Monroe  |  Series: The Ozark Cold Cases

Daniel Scott and his K9, Ranger, arrive at the Ozark trailhead after a hiker reports screams. Melissa Ward steps out of the trees, silent and watchful. Daniel questions why she’s there; she says the forest “called her.” Ranger alerts on a scent leading into a narrow holler. She identifies broken brush Daniel missed. He distrusts her reputation for avoiding people. They find blood on a rock near the creek. Dispatch orders Daniel to keep Melissa with him for safety. They follow Ranger deeper into the forest. She flinches at a distant echo—old trauma surfacing. He softens slightly, seeing her shake it off. They find a torn backpack and scattered belongings. Daniel wants to call backup; Melissa insists they’re close. They move forward but stay within sight of each other. The dog growls at a narrow rock passage. They crawl into a tight ravine. Melissa spots someone watching from the ridge. Daniel gives pursuit but loses the figure. A carved symbol on a tree marks the area as dangerous. They find a barely alive man whispering, “He’s still out there.” Daniel radios for medics while Melissa checks the man’s injuries. The man mutters about “the silent holler” and a hidden cabin. He hates relying on Melissa’s instincts. She avoids eye contact, keeping emotions locked down. Ranger picks up a second scent trail. A rockslide nearly hits them—clearly triggered. He pulls her out of the path of falling debris. She snaps at him for touching her; he snaps back. They locate a hidden cabin deep in the holler. Maps, ropes, and photos of hikers cover the walls. She recognizes a symbol from her own childhood trauma. He gently asks what she remembers; she refuses to say. Someone circles the cabin. They hide together in a cramped storage space. Their breathing syncs in the dark. The footsteps fade. Daniel demands answers; Melissa storms out. The dog uncovers a buried box containing IDs of missing hikers. Melissa admits the symbol belongs to the man who abducted her as a child. He vows they’ll stop the man together. She nearly quits the case. They follow a new trail leading uphill. A snare catches Ranger’s leg. They free the dog, hands shaking. Melissa strokes Ranger, walls cracking. They find boot prints heading toward a cliffside cave. Thunder shakes the ridge. They wait out the worst of the storm. Lightning flashes as they lean close. Daniel stops it, saying she’s scared, not ready. She accuses him of treating her like a victim. Their comms go dead. They hear a scream echo from the cave. They sprint toward the echo. The cave twists into narrow passages. They find a room with restraints and survival gear. A missing hiker is tied up but alive. The predator attacks from behind. Daniel struggles while Melissa grabs a rock. She knocks the attacker off Daniel. The man is a former local guide who vanished years ago. Rangers flood the cave. Melissa shakes uncontrollably. She finally lets herself lean into him. She tells him everything about her abduction. He admits he’s been falling for her since the first trail sign. They kiss under the dripping cave mouth. Medics take the rescued hiker away. They hand over evidence from the cabin. Melissa is asked to consult on future tracking cases. He asks her to stay in the Ozarks—with him. She agrees, saying she’s tired of running. They hike out of the holler together, Ranger leading the way. Hand in hand, they step onto the trail toward their next case.
