Lanterns in the Rain

When photographer Angela Martinez arrives in Kyoto at the start of the rainy season, she expects only to document the city’s artisans. Instead, she finds shelter beneath the eaves of a quiet workshop where Matthew Clark, a reserved kimono dyer, is arranging bolts of indigo fabric. What begins as a polite exchange soon draws her into his world of careful hands, steeped colors, and unspoken restraint.
