Clearwater Promises

Author: L. M. Rowan  |  Series: Saltwater Weekends

Nicole Taylor has spent years capturing other people’s weddings through her lens, but after calling off her own, she no longer believes in happily-ever-afters. Seeking silence and distance from Tampa’s wedding circuit, she drives to Clearwater Beach for a solo weekend with nothing but her vintage film camera and the Gulf’s steady horizon.

On the sand she meets Jason Miller, a local boat builder restoring a wooden skiff. His quiet philosophy—that a boat is a promise to keep someone safe—challenges the cynicism she has carried for three years. As they share coffee on the unfinished hull and walk the shoreline at low tide, Nicole begins to photograph again, this time for herself.

Together they discover the Hidden Pier, a place revealed only at the year’s lowest tide. In the raw light of dawn, surrounded by barnacle-crusted wood and the smell of cedar and salt, Nicole’s old passion returns. Jason’s steady presence and his own story of rebuilding after loss show her that some promises are worth keeping.

By the end of the weekend Nicole cancels her contracts, signs a lease beside Jason’s workshop, and opens The Tide Gallery. In Clearwater’s blue water and Jason’s workshop, she finds the lens she had been missing and learns that love, like a well-built boat, can be made to last.
