The Cypress Hollow Legacy

Author: L. C. Hollander  |  Series: Cypress Hollow Chronicles

At forty-seven, renowned architect Maya Sterling returns to the misty cypress groves of Cypress Hollow, Georgia. The scarred stretch of land known as the Dead Ground lies between her family’s spring and the rival Vane timberline, a living reminder of the century-old feud she has spent her life trying to contain through structure and distance. As the last Sterling, she has been asked to oversee the Peace Obelisk, a monument meant to end the hatred—until she comes face to face with Julian Vane Jr., the retired judge whose quiet presence carries the weight of every verdict he once delivered.

Their first clash over the obelisk’s placement is interrupted when their shovels strike a lead-lined time capsule buried since 1865. Etched with both family crests, the artifact releases letters that threaten to either heal the hollow or reignite the old conflict through legal sabotage. Forced together by sudden autumn gales, mudslides, and long nights in a construction trailer, Maya and Julian move from wary respect to an unexpected intimacy built on shared exhaustion and guarded hearts.

As the town’s traditionalists move to halt the park, the couple works through the night to transcribe the 1865 documents. The letters reveal the Sterling “betrayal” was a ruse to protect the Vanes, shifting the ground beneath generations of resentment. In the quiet hours beside the rising foundation and later beside the completed Reflection Pond, Maya and Julian allow themselves the slow-burning love neither expected.

With the park finished and the truth public, Maya no longer needs the rigid walls her career once provided. Julian turns away from a seat on the State Supreme Court to remain as the park’s guardian. Together they file the combined land deed, plant the final Unity Grove, and stand on the observation tower as the first snow falls over ground that is no longer dead.
