Traveling troupe actress Melissa Carter arrives in Silver Peak for the opera house debut. Sheriff Daniel Brooks oversees security for the grand opening. Melissa rehearses loudly in the street; Daniel shuts her down for “disturbing the peace.” Melissa explores the ornate new theater. A stagehand finds a dead man behind the curtains. Daniel locks down the building. She insists the troupe is innocent and offers to help. Daniel reluctantly agrees to let her assist with witness accounts. They find a torn glove and a smudged footprint. Actors whisper that Melissa is getting too close to the sheriff. He keeps Melissa at arm’s length. She notices the victim’s costume was altered recently. Daniel suspects robbery; Melissa insists it’s personal. She admits she’s tired of never being taken seriously. He acknowledges her sharp eye. A sandbag nearly falls on Melissa during rehearsal. Daniel believes the killer is still inside the troupe. Rumors spread, threatening the opening night. A second body is found in the orchestra pit. Daniel questions troupe members while Melissa observes. They review clues together each morning. Their banter becomes warm and teasing. He reveals he once failed to solve a case that cost a life. She shares how she fled a controlling theater manager. They find a hidden pocket sewn into the victim’s coat. They lean close over fabric samples. Daniel abruptly steps back. Melissa receives a note warning her to stop investigating. Daniel demands she stay out of it; she refuses. They agree she’ll stay within sight during rehearsals. Melissa discovers a hidden door behind a backdrop. Inside the passage they find a ledger of illegal gambling debts. A troupe member flees when questioned. Daniel and Melissa pursue him through the back streets. He admits the victim owed money to a dangerous creditor. Daniel admits he fears losing Melissa to danger. She tells him she trusts him completely. The opera house catches fire during rehearsal. They vow to stop the killer before opening night. Daniel determines the fire was arson. Melissa recognizes the arsonist’s glove pattern from the first crime. They set a trap during dress rehearsal. Actors whisper nervously as the show begins. The theater manager attempts to sabotage the set. Daniel fights the manager above the stage. She cuts a rope to block the manager’s escape. Daniel arrests him as the crowd panics. The manager killed to cover gambling debts and frame the troupe. She fears Daniel will forget her once the case ends. He admits he’s fallen for her. They kiss behind the curtain as applause erupts. The show resumes to a packed audience. The cast celebrates the solved mystery. Daniel asks Melissa to remain in Silver Peak. She chooses to build a new life in the town. They stand together on the opera house balcony. Hand in hand, they walk into the Silver Peak night.
