Description

Jolene Vance, a fierce widow in her late fifties guarding her family’s rugged timberland along Copper Creek in the shadowed hollers of West Virginia’s Appalachian ridges, carries the deep scar of a love lost to a generations-old feud with the neighboring Thornes. Once, as a young woman, she shared stolen kisses with Caleb Thorne across that same creek, but betrayal and family loyalty tore them apart, leaving her heart armored behind resentment and a solitary devotion to the land that is all she has left after her father’s death and her brother’s abandonment. Now, she stands resolute at the rusted barbed-wire fence line, the only barrier between her fragile independence and the encroaching world.

When Caleb Thorne, equally weathered by time and regret, arrives with a legal notice demanding an easement across her creek for his timber operations, their forced proximity reignites a smoldering attraction that threatens to upend the Vance-Thorne enmity forever. With her land, legacy, and long-buried desires on the line, Jolene must confront whether to cling to pride and isolation or risk everything for a second chance at passion and partnership in this heartfelt second-chance romance pulsing with mountain grit, tender confessions, and the raw promise of healing old wounds through shared firelight and unyielding love.

This one surprised me—didn’t expect the mountain setting to feel so lived-in, or how the slow-burn tension between Jolene and Caleb would sneak up on me through quiet fence-line talks and old grudges. The pacing felt just right, letting the decades-old hurt breathe before anything heated up. By the last chapter I was rooting for both of them without realizing it.
