Description

In 1863 Pennsylvania, schoolteacher Hannah Whitfield begins her days sorting donated supplies for Union soldiers. When a misplaced letter arrives from Corporal James Carver, wounded at Fredericksburg, she chooses to reply despite never having met him.

Their correspondence deepens over weeks, moving from gratitude to personal confessions. Hannah hides the letters from her overprotective father while townsfolk criticize her for writing a stranger. James reveals the loss of his younger brother, and Hannah admits she looks forward to his words above all else.

As Confederate forces march toward Gettysburg, James is sent to Pennsylvania. His letters stop as battle rages. Hannah defies her father to search makeshift hospitals for the wounded, following a trail of rumors and one returned, stained letter.

She finds James alive but gravely injured. Through fever, a surgeon’s warning, and her father’s confrontation, Hannah refuses to leave his side. Their bond, first forged in ink, becomes real amid the ashes of war.
